SharePoint is important because of so many reasons that I will try to cover in the following bullet points:

1- SharePoint provides so many features that are out of the box, features like blogs, wiki, document management with versioning, security permissions, check in & check out, are all out of the box
2- SharePoint has a free edition that is called Windows SharePoint Services, that you can easily install on a Microsoft Windows server with the free edition of Microsoft SQL Server, having said that, you can have a small company Intranet in 15 minutes with all bells and whistles
3- The free edition of SharePoint is shipped with almost all the enterprise servers of Microsoft such as Microsoft Business Solutions (CRM, GP, Exapta, etc.) and Microsoft Project Server
4- SharePoint offers free integration with Microsoft Office, means you can create new file and easily upload it to on SharePoint site and get all the document management features
5- Lists is a great feature that allows you to create any sort of data structure in few minutes
6- MOSS ( Microsoft Office SharePoint Server) has other enterprise features such as Web Content Management, Record Management, Enterprise Search Server, etc.

The list is quite extensive I just wanted to give you some of the features that are in my mind now, I hope this highlights the importance of SharePoint and why it has become such a common technology

I was thinking of writing a series of articles about the SharePoint for Project managers but I am not quite sure whether it will interesting to everyone

Thank you,
